The UK Professional Bodies which chaplains join exist to promote the very best standards of care. As part of that commitment they have always produced a Code of Conduct to inform and advise their members.
In recent years the pace of change in health care has increased, and the complexity of modern services and user expectations has grown. In the light of this the three bodies have agreed to publish a new Code which sensitively locates chaplains within a framework of conduct that other staff and patients will recognize.
This draft is therefore offered for consultation, and the three bodies will take seriously the concerns and observations of those who respond. We want to get this right – and ensure that those whom chaplains serve have a common point of reference to understand how we work.
For those on our Register the Code will have a direct relationship with the maintenance of registered status, and this will be further clarified in the coming months. For all other chaplains we believe that the document will be a valuable resource not only to communicate best practice but also to enhance the general understanding of volunteers and others who have a close involvement with chaplaincy services.
We commend the new draft Code for your consideration and look forward to receiving your comments.
